Hi and welcome to Owen's website!
My name is Owen Doherty, I am a Ph.D. Candidate in Atmospheric Science at Stony Brook University in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (SoMAS) . I am advised by both Nicole Riemer of the University of Illinois and J. Kirk Cochran of SoMAS. I also work closely with Sultan Hameed of SoMAS and Troy Rasbury of the Isotope Labratory of Geosciences Department of Stony Brook. Prior to my Ph.D. work I received a B.S. in Atmospheric Science from Cornell University and a M.S. in Marine and Atmospheric Science from Stony Brook University, where I was advised by Nicole Riemer.
My research interest is climate system variability, specifically focusing on how regional climate impacts natural processes. My Ph.D. research is on understanding the variability of mineral dust in the atmosphere. This problem extends beyond the traditional disciplines of atmospheric science and geology and so I have hands-on experience with both geochemical lab techniques as well as computer based atmospheric science data analysis projects. Learn more about my research here.
Since I was a little boy I've had a passion for teaching. My family enjoys reminding me that when I was in elementary school I would make up assignments for family members and make them sit through classes I would offer. Today people actually pay money to sit through my lectures and I've been lucky enough as a graduate student to be the instructor of record in three courses here at Stony Brook.
